After reading Carl Hiaasen’s Hoot with much enjoyment, I was happy to read another book by him. I found this book, Scat, and since the blurb was intriguing and the cover was cute I borrowed it. Though the first few chapters made this book seem shallow and ‘kid-like’, there is a deeper aspect in this book, though not as deep and memorable as Hoot. I think Carl Hiaasen likes to alert people of the danger we are doing to wildlife, and I enjoyed reading his tales of saving nature.
Mrs. Starch, a fearsome biology teacher at Truman High School, is the terror among her students. No one likes her and sinister rumors about her are everywhere. But when she disappears after a field trip goes wrong, Nick and Martha, two of her students, are determined to find out the truth about what happened to her. But there are some mysterious things going on around town. What will they uncover along their adventure?
Though this book was not as interesting as Hoot, it was still an amusing read. Therefore I give it 7.5 stars and recommend it for ages 9+. It was fun to read.
